Otello is an opera composed by Giuseppe Verdi, based on the Shakespeare play of the same name. This film is a recording of the 1986 production of Verdi's masterpiece, starring Spanish tenor Placido Domingo as the Moorish general Otello, bass-baritone Justino Diaz as the treacherous Iago, and Katia Ricciarelli as Otello's virtuous, beautiful and persecuted wife, Desdemona. This incredibly poignant opera is a devastating, cautionary tale of jealousy and revenge. Wicked Iago, an ensign, is infuriated when his general, Otello, promotes another man above him. Vowing to ruin his commanding officer, Iago concocts a treacherous and deceitful plan to convince Otello that his wife, Desdemona, has been unfaithful. Moments after he kills her, Otello learns that she was innocent and had been framed by Iago as an act of vengeance. Mad with grief, Otello draws his dagger and fatally stabs himself; in his final moments, he lies down beside his beloved Desdemona and dies.
