Othello is a 1995 adaptation of Shakespeare's play starring Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh. Othello (Laurence Fishburne) is a general of Moorish descent in the Venetian army. As the film opens, Othello has just secretly married Desdemona (Irene Jacob) and promoted a soldier named Cassio (Nathaniel Parker). Iago (Kenneth Branagh), another soldier, is dismayed to learn that Othello favored Cassio over him. Believing that Othello is having an affair with Iago's wife Emilia (Anna Patrick), Iago schemes to undermine Cassio and destroy Othello's marriage. First, Iago gets Cassio drunk and manipulates him into fighting an officer, causing Othello to strip Cassio of his rank. Iago then convinces Othello that Cassio is sleeping with Desdemona, and the two men plot Cassio's death. After Iago plants a handkerchief given to Desdemona by Othello in Cassio's room, Othello is determined to seek revenge on his wife. Directed by Oliver Parker, Othello was praised by critics for its strong acting.
