Out of Time is an action film that focuses on one man's fight to prove his innocence. Matt Whitlock (Denzel Washington) is the chief of police of a small Florida town. He recently conducted a drug bust that turned up $450,000. Matt is currently seeing Anne Merai Harrison (Sanaa Lathan) who is married to an abusive football player, Chris (Dean Cain). When Matt learns that Anne has terminal cancer, he encourages her to go to Switzerland to undergo a new form on treatment. He gives her the $450,000 to get the treatment. Meanwhile, Anne names Matt as the sole beneficiary of her $1,000,000 life insurance policy. Shortly thereafter, a house fire occurs in the home of Anne and Chris which kills them and destroys the $450,000. Knowing that police could suspect him of having set the fire in order to kill Anne and collect the life insurance policy money, Matt begins an investigation to find out what really happened. What he discovers makes him question everything he has ever known.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Manohla Dargis

    Variety Todd McCarthy

A tasty if wildly far-fetched thriller, Out of Time proves far stronger in its characterizations than in developing genuine suspense.

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Although it is briskly directed and enjoyably stylized, the film is shallow -- but empty.
