Over the Hill is a 1992 drama directed by George Miller. When Alma (Olympia Dukakis) finds herself alone, widowed, and unable to take her son's advice about moving into a basement apartment in Maine, she decides to take a life altering journey to visit her estranged daughter, Elizabeth (Sigrid Thorton) who lives in Sydney, Australia. The visit is met with disappointment from her daughter who feels that Alma is an intrusion. Alma decides to buy a souped-up car and take a trip to Melbourne. Along the way, her life is changed and the journey turns into a trip of self discovery as she meets up with memorable characters who change her view of the world and give her a new strength in life. This journey gives her courage, enough in fact, for Alma to revisit Elizabeth and make a new start on their troubled relationship where she takes advantage of her new adventurous views about life.
