Oyster Farmer is a full-length motion picture about a man who travels to a remote community and finds a world he did not anticipate. Written and directed by Australian Anna Reeves, this 2004 story about a simple community of oyster farmers is touching and original. Jack Flange (Alex O'Loughlin) is a nomad that moves from the big city to Australia's Hawkesbury River region to await a package of stolen money he had mailed to himself. The package does not arrive, and he suspects the lovely, strong willed Pearl (Diana Glenn) of taking it. In the meantime, he finds a job in the simple community of oyster farmers, and attempts to get to get to know the potential burglar. As the story goes on, Jack begins to feel more and more at home, wondering if this was simply a stop on the trip or if this is a final destination. The Australian sensibilities abound in this charming story; the score is reminiscent of native aboriginal music, and the local scenes in Australia feel authentic and familiar. Oyster Farmer is indeed a hidden gem worth uncovering.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Variety

A small, carefully composed film that rejoices in the parochial lingo and mores of its richly textured characters.

  • 60

    The New York Times

This darkly humorous, sometimes even raunchy film mostly eludes a typical cutesy, feel-good formula.

  • 50

New York Daily News Jami Bernard

The realistic scenes of oyster farming and the beauty of the Hawkesbury River lend this movie a degree of fascination that its taciturn, beer-swilling characters can't provide.
