Paint Your Wagon is a musical directed by Joshua Logan. Set in Californian gold mining country, the story begins when prospector Ben Rumson (Lee Marvin) finds a wagon with two brothers crashed in a ravine. While one brother is dead, he takes the other, Pardner (Clint Eastwood), under his wing while he recuperates from a broken arm and leg. As Ben buries Pardner's brother, he finds gold dust at the side of the grave. "No Name City" springs up overnight. As the tent city becomes a boomtown, the streets fill with gambling, drinking and singing. With female companionship in short supply, however, the men become increasingly lonely. When Jacob Woodling (John Mitchum), a Mormon, comes to town with his two wives, it's more than the men can handle. Elizabeth (Jean Seberg), Woodling's younger wife, agrees to be sold to the highest bidder. As luck would have it, Ben wins the auction and Elizabeth becomes his wife. After the marriage, however, Ben grows increasing paranoid as the men of the town wantonly eye his new bride. To relieve the tension, Ben joins of gang of men that raid a neighboring town for "six French Tarts." While he is gone, however, Elizabeth and Pardner begin to fall in love. When Ben returns, Elizabeth has a novel suggestions to solve the problem. That is, until the civilized people from the East come to town.moreless
