Pale Rider is a 1985 Western film produced, directed by, and starring legendary filmmaker and actor Clint Eastwood, who brings audiences this classic tale of the American West, 1880, when a mysterious Preacher rides into a town of oppressed gold miners and defends the simple folk from the attacks of opportunist criminals. Lahood, California, is a peaceful and poor community, occupied by a small group of settlers who spend their days panning for gold in the local waters. The miners start being harassed by Cory LaHood (Richard Dysart), a big-time miner who wants to claim Lahood as part of his property. 14-year-old Megan Wheeler (Sydney Penny), prays for a savior to fight for her poor town. Shortly thereafter, The Preacher (Eastwood) rides into town, ready to dish out justice to all who would seek to take advantage of these poor and struggling people. Pale Rider is an acclaimed and classic Western, a true must-see for fans of Clint Eastwood's other entries into this prototypical American genre.

It's beautiful, too. Westerns just don't work without scenery, and Bruce Surtees, the cinematographer, shoots postcards. [28 June 1985, p.1]

Pale Rider may be a risk simply because westerns are not in vogue right now at the box office, but fresh and challenging westerns with Clint Eastwood always will be in vogue.
