Panic Room is a 2002 thriller directed by David Fincher. Meg Altman (Jodie Foster) feels determined to make a good life for herself and her preteen daughter, Sarah (Kristen Stewart), despite her recent divorce. Meg decides to buy a gorgeous new brownstone located in New York, hoping to build a new life here. She soon learns that the former owner was paranoid and reclusive, resulting in a secret room called the "panic room." Meg and Sarah brush off the room as an oddity, confident that they will never have to use such a strange invention. However, the very night that Meg and Sarah move into their beautiful new home, they find that they have unwanted guests. A group of thieves led by the former owner's grandson, Junior (Jared Leto), are just as surprised by the Altmans as the Altmans are by them. While Meg and Sarah make a dash for the panic room, the intruders try to figure out how to neutralize this unexpected complication. It soon becomes clear that Meg will have to use her wits to escape the panic room.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Smartly plotted, convincingly acted and brilliantly executed technically, this engrossing thriller adds some clever modern wrinkles to the time-tested formula of sinister intruders...

  • 70

The New York Times Dana Stevens

    An above-average thriller.

  • 60

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

What's surprising about this traditional thriller, moderately successful but not completely satisfying, is exactly how genteel and unsurprising the execution turns out to be.
