Pan's Labyrinth is a Mexican fantasy film from acclaimed writer and director Guillermo Del Toro about one young woman trapped in the politically volatile world of 1944 Spain, and the fantasy world she discovers amidst the harsh realities of the Fascist regime. Ivana Baquero plays Ofelia, a young girl who travels with her pregnant mother to live with her new step-father, the villainous Captain Vidal. Captain Vidal leads a group of soldiers stationed on a farm in rural Spain. He's a ruthless man who strikes fear into the hearts of his men. Without any other children or playmates, Ofelia explores the area on her own. In a nearby labyrinth she meets a mythical faun who believes Ofelia is the reincarnation of a brave princess who died years ago. If Ofelia can complete Pan's three tasks before the full moon, she can return to her father's realm. This film is a gripping combination of gritty war stories and elaborate fairy tales. Pan's Labyrinth won three Academy Awards out of six nominations and received universal critical acclaim.moreless
