Panther is a 1995 drama that was written and directed by Mario Van Peebles. It is a semi historical film chronicling the original of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. The film goes from 1966 to 1968 showing the Black Panther's growth in Oakland, California and uses some black and white actual footage from the period to emphasize certain scenes. Oakland became a war zone in the 60s as the Black Panthers battled the racist police force who was trying to suppress them. The three key players of the Panther movement in this film are Huey Newton (played by Marcus Chong), Eldridge Cleaver (played by Anthony Griffith), and Bobby Seale (played by Courtney B. Vance). Also in this film is Angela Basset, playing Malcolm X's widow Dr. Betty Shabazz. The film unfortunately falls flat, mainly from the simplistic directing of Mario Van Peebles. The film plays more as an action film than as an actual historical document.
