Paper Dragons, made in 1996, is a movie about Paul Marcos (Jeremy Renner), a Russian immigrant who takes a spiritual journey, disciplined by his learning of martial arts, from a life of crime. Caused by his struggling to survive, Paul turns to a life of drug dealing in order to support himself. Being only a small time dealer, Paul soon gets persuaded into participating in a massive drug heist. They plan on stealing from a local Chinese gang, headed by one of the most lethal kingpins around. When the heist goes wrong, the gangsters seek revenge by sending out two corrupt cops to find and kill Paul and the others involved. All are killed except Paul, who finds himself injured and taking refuge in a Buddhist temple. As the monks teach him Mantis style martial arts, he vows to lead a new peaceful way of living, until he discovers a hidden agenda of the monks, which forces him into a confrontation with the gangsters who changed his life. Although centered around martial arts, Paper Dragons is not an action movie, but a drama; it is about a transformation of character, through the self-discipline and ethics learned from martial arts.moreless
