Paper Lion is a comedic sports film directed by Alex March based on the novel of the same name by George Plimpton centered on the writer's real life experience in the training camp of the Detroit Lions. Similar to Plimpton's earlier experience in Out of My League, Plimpton (Alan Alda) decides to answer the question of how an average man would fare in the professional athletic world as he joins the 1963 Detroit Lions team as the third-sting quarterback. Not an athlete in any way, Plimpton is a bit more of a klutzy clown than anything else, especially since he knows next to nothing on how to actually take part in the action of a football game. As he gets bruised and battered by the defense, including Alex Karras and Roger Aaron Brown (playing themselves), Plimpton gives a better look at what happens during the training as players push themselves in preparation for the upcoming season, always in the hopes of maintaining their spots for the love of the game.moreless
