Movie Summary

Oren Peli

Paranormal Activity is a 2007 supernatural horror film that became an instant box office success. The film follows a young couple, Katie and Micah, as they move into their new home. Little do they know, the new home in which they reside happens to be haunted by paranormal entities. What we soon find out is that Katie has been haunted all of her life and that the hauntings are no coincidence and no simple ghost. In fact, Katie is being haunted by an evil demon that has followed her into her new home. The film uses a documentary style technique to show the seat jumping and often highly convincing paranormal events. The film is considered to be one of the most profitable films ever made due to it's enormous return on investment. The film's budget was $15,000 and made a whopping $193 million. The rights to the film were bought by Paramount Pictures for a measly $350,000. The profit inspired the creation of a sequel film.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Betsy Sharkey

Peli works at mining the unknown, the unknowable, like a minimalist, using small moments and virtually no special effects exceedingly well.

  • 80

    Variety Dennis Harvey

Paranormal succeeds in staying unnervingly "real."

  • 50

The New York Times A.O. Scott

A crudely made, half-clever little frightener that has become something of a pop-culture sensation and most certainly the movie marketing story of the year.

  • I fail to see why this movie is so great

Don't get me wrong I don't think it's a horrible film, I think it's decent, yet it's also very boring for me. All it mainly is is Micah and Katie talking about the demon and sleeping for most of the film. Micah is also unbelievably stupid and such a jerk in aggravating the demon and getting a Ouija board despite being told not to by a psychic and Katie. Honestly, Micah was such a moron, I was rooting for the demon the whole time. The night scenes where the demon attacks did nothing to scare me, instead I was just bored.

However, it is not the worst horror film I've watched (The Apparition wins that title). For one, though I was bored with this film, it also felt very real. The demon attacks in the night scenes were very convincing enough to keep me watching. And I will admit, the scenes where possessed Katie watched Micah for several hours was actually scary for me. Overall, if you're a horror fan like me, I would suggest you rent this film or see it on TV before you buy it.moreless
