Released:
1989
Rating:
R

Parents is a dark and slightly gruesome satire about suburban life in the 1950s. Michael Laemie (Brian Madorsky) lives with his stern father, Nick (Randy Quaid) and high-strung mom, Lily (Mary Beth Hurt). Michael begins to wonder about their night-time activities, especially after a bizarre nightmare one night that involves a bloody ritual in the living room. Michael's feeling of unease turns to the certainty that his mortician father is bringing his work home in the form of corpses for dinners. The horrified young man first tries to talk to a school friend, Sheila(Juno Mills-Cockell), but she thinks he needs to talk to an adult. He then turns for help to his school counselor, Millie Dew (Sandy Dennis), but she reassures him that it must be his imagination. She even stops by for dinner. Directed by Bob Balaban, this strange and funny film plays on the fears many children have about their parents.
