Parting Glances chronicles the early days of the AIDS epidemic in 1980s Manhattan. Steve Buscemi, in one of his first starring roles, plays Nick a punk rocker on the verge of superstardom who is suffering from AIDS. He is attended to by his ex-boyfriend Michael (Richard Ganoung). Michael is embarking on a long-distance relationship with his new boyfriend, Robert (John Bolger) who is set to leave for work in Africa. The lead-up to Robert's going away party provides the action for the narrative. The film follows Michael through his days leading up to Robert's going away party as he is caught between his past and current loves. The film, too, depicts his struggle with the havoc AIDS is wreaking among his close-knit group of friends. Parting Glances is one of the first films to take on the AIDS epidemic in the gay community and a must-watch for anyone interested in what it was like in the early days of the disease.moreless
