Partition is set amid the chaos of the separation of India and Pakistan. Gian Singh (Jimi Mistry) and Avtar Singh (Irrfan Khan) are two former Indian army officers from Sarsa, Punjab. As the British leave, many people are displaced after finding themselves on the 'wrong' side of the border between Islamic Pakistan and secular India. Mass killings follow, and Avtar becomes involved in the slaughter. After refusing to take part, Gian finds a young Muslim girl, Naseem Khan (Kristin Kreuk) hiding near his village. He disguises her as a boy so he can hide her, but she is found out and his neighbors demand she be killed or, at best, sent away. Despite this, Gian and Naseem fall in love and marry. As ethnic and religious tensions rise, can they build a life together, or will Naseem's desire to meet her family in Pakistan cause them to be separated by the border forever?
