Written and directed by Paul Gross, Passchendaele is a 2008 Canadian film starring Caroline Dhavernas, Joe Dinicol, and Paul Gross. Inspired by stories passed down to him from his grandfather, Gross tells the story of Michael Dunne (Gross), a soldier who is wounded in World War I. When he is brought to a nearby hospital, Dunne is taken care of by Sarah Mann (Dhavernas), a beautiful young nurse. He quickly falls in love with her, and when he discovers that her younger brother, David (Dinicol), has been called to fight, Dunne courageously chooses to go with him in order to keeping him safe. The battle that the two soldiers are about to fight, however, is the Battle of Passchendaele, one of the bloodiest conflicts in the war. When David encounters trouble in battle, Dunne rushes to his aid, only to be shot. Will his bravery save David's life or did he go too far in risking his own? Passcehndaele won awards for Art Direction, Costume Design, Sound, and the overall Best Picture prize at the 2009 Genie Awards.moreless
