Passion in the Desert is a 1998 drama about a French soldier who becomes lost in the desert during the Napoleonic Wars and enters into a strange relationship with a leopard. After Napoleon decides to invade Egypt, he dispatches an artist, Jean-Michel Venture de Paradis (Michel Piccoli), to the country to paint its landscape and significant monuments. Venture de Paradis is accompanied by a French officer, Augustin Robert (Ben Daniels), who is charged with protecting him. After becoming lost in the desert and dying of thirst, the two men part ways, with Robert finding a Bedouin village where he steals water. After being chased from the village, Robert retreats to a cave in the distance, where he encounters a leopard. Initially fearful, Robert is stunned when the leopard, whom he names Simoom, protects him from the Bedouins who have chased him to the cave. Robert and the leopard form an intimate bond that is tested when French soldiers attempt to kill Simoom for food.moreless
