The Passion of Anna is a 1969 Swedish film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman and starring Liv Ullmann, Bibi Andersson, Erland Josephson and Max von Sydow. Andreas Winkelman (von Sydow) is mourning the failure of his marriage when he meets Anna Fromm (Ullmann), a widow grieving the recent deaths of her husband and son. Anna asks to use Andreas' phone, and as she does, he listens in. When she leaves she forgets her handbag, and before he informs her that it is in his possession, Andreas reads a letter hidden within that tells a different story about the recent events in Anna's life. In his attempt to return the handbag, Andreas becomes friends with Eva and Elis, and despite Eva's warnings to stay away from Anna, Andreas and Anna move in together. The Passion of Anna won Ingmar Bergman the Best Director Award at the 1971 National Society of Film Critics Awards.
