Passionada is a romance film that focuses on one woman's attempt to overcome tragedy. Celia Amonte (Sofia Milos) is a Portuguese-American woman who is recently widowed. Along with her daughter Vicky (Emmy Rossum), she lives in Massachusetts. Meanwhile, Charlie Beck (Jason Issacs) is a British card counter who arrives in town to gamble and visit with some friends. One day, Charlie goes to a Portuguese restaurant with his friends where he watches Celia sing a traditional Portuguese song. He immediately becomes enamored with her and approaches her. Still not over the death of her husband, Celia turns down Charlie's advances. However, Charlie refuses to give up on her, so he finds her address in the phone book and makes a visit to Celia's home, where he sees Vicky. In exchange for card counting lessons, she makes a deal with Charlie to get her mother to go on a date with him. Watch Passionada to find out if Celia can overcome her husband's death and move on with Charlie.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Director Dan Ireland and the Jermanoks strive for and achieve a light romantic comedy with humorous, fanciful plotting yet shaded by genuine tenderness and passion.

  • 70

    Variety

A lovely, albeit imperfect fable marked by strong performances and infused with glorious bursts of soulful fado folk music.

  • 40

The New York Times Dana Stevens

As Passionada ambles toward a formulaic fairy-tale ending, it exudes such giddy self-assurance that you wish you could believe in it.
