Paul's Case is a 1980 drama directed by Lamont Johnson and based on the short story of the same name by Willa Cather. Paul (Eric Roberts) lives a discontented and unfulfilled life in Pittsburgh. He fantasizes constantly about making a better life for himself, but with limited work opportunities, he does not see any way to achieve his dreams. His actor friend, Charlie (Gus Kaikkonen), gives Paul a glimpse into the glamorous and worldly life he imagines for himself, but for the time being, he works as an usher and feels as if life is cheating him. Paul soon realizes that if he cannot become a wealthy man through honest work, there is always a chance for dishonesty. After stealing a large sum of money, he heads to New York City and spends all his money on the grandeur and finery he has always wanted. When he has to face reality again, however, Paul finds that his life has been irrevocably changed.moreless
