Penn of Pennsylvania moves from stifling 17th century England to the eager shores of the New World in this historic 1942 overview of Pennsylvania's founder. The movie traces the famous Quaker William Penn (Clifford Evans) in his efforts to secure the right to an American colony from Charles II (Dennis Arundull) and through the challenges of creating a new settlement. Once Penn is granted his charter, he sets out to recruit fresh colonists for his grand new project, helped by his faithful wife Gulielma (Deborah Kerr). He quickly finds trouble, however, due to his insistence on freedom of religious expression. Determined to carry on despite family tragedy, Penn also resists the pressures of other colonial interests and, unusually for his time, negotiates with the local Native American chieftain (Gibb McLaughlin), as well as having a few run-ins with the famous writer Samuel Pepys (Henry Oscar). In the end, Penn's colony is successful, but at a personal cost to Penn and his family.moreless
