Period of Adjustment is a 1962 drama from director George Roy Hill and starring Anthony Franciosa, Jane Fonda, Jim Hutton, and Lois Nettleton in a story about the trials and tribulations of marriage adapted from the classic stage play of the same name by Tennessee Williams. Hutton and Fonda play George and Isabel Haverstick, two newlyweds who are having trouble getting along because George has a compulsive need to be the macho alpha dog in the relationship, an irrational impulse that leads him to having terrible performance anxiety in bed. Franciosa and Nettleton play Ralph and Dorothea Baitz, a couple who have been together for years. Dorothea has grown to resent Ralph after learning he married her because she has great wealth. What she has yet to learn, however, is that Ralph has fallen deeply in love with her since they've been married. Period of Adjustment is a touching and funny commentary on how married couple communicate and work through the hard times.moreless
