Persuasion is the 1995 BBC production of Jane Austen's final novel about an old love affair getting a second chance. Eight years ago, Anne Elliot (Amanda Root) fell in love with Frederick Wentworth (Ciaran Hinds), but her father, Sir Walter Elliot (Corin Redgrave) and older sister, Elizabeth (Phoebe Nicholls) convinced Anne to turn down his marriage proposal. Wentworth did not have the proper social connections or money to belong to the Elliot family. Now 27 years old, Anne is considered an old maid and her family is near bankruptcy. Her father must rent out the family estate to Admiral Croft (John Woodvine), which brings Wentworth back into Anne's social world, as he is Croft's brother-in-law. Now a Captain and a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, Wentworth has money, connections and the most eligible of bachelors. His sister, Mrs. Croft (Fiona Shaw), wants Wentworth to marry Louisa (Emma Roberts), her new sister-in-law, but he still has eyes for Anne.
