Phaedra is a 1962 English and Greek film directed by Jules Dassin and starring Melina Mercouri, Anthony Perkins, and Raf Vallone. Set in modern times, the film is a contemporary retelling of Eurpides' Hippolytus. The story concerns Thanos (Vallone), a wealthy shipping magnate whose son Alexis (Perkins) has fallen for his step-mom, and Thanos' wife, Phaedra (Mercouri). The affair between Phaedra and Alexis begins when she goes to London to retrieve Alex and bring him back home to Greece. Thanos has asked him to come back home so that he may learn the family business as well as be betrothed to the daughter of another wealthy businessman. Wracked with guilt, Alexis is unable to tell his father that he has been sleeping with Phaedra, but when Phaedra discovers that Alexis is to be wed, she tells Thanos herself. Enraged, he beats Alexis and abuses Phaedra. Melina Mercouri was nominated for a 1963 BAFTA Award for her performance in the film.
