1940

Phantom of Chinatown is a revamped Jimmy Wong mystery about the mysterious death of a archaeologist. After a successful expedition to the Mongolian desert, Dr. John Benton (Charles F. Miller) returns to Southern University in San Francisco to give a lecture on his findings, but his presentation is cut short when he shockingly falls to his death. Befuddled by the many unusual pieces of evidence, from the strange Chinese poison used to the contents of a seemingly very important scroll, doofus detective Captain Street (Grant Withers) calls upon the services of Jimmy Lee Wong (Keye Luke), an amateur investigator and former student of Benton's. Together with the late archaeologist's Win Lee (Lotus Long), Wong and Street set out to solve this mystery, taking them deep into forbidden and ancient realms. Phil Rosen directs this classy whodunit, featuring a relative newcomer in Luke as the famed part of Wong.
