Picnic at Hanging Rock is the chilling 1975 mystery, adapted from the novel by Joan Lindsay and directed by master filmmaker Peter Weir (The Truman Show, Witness, Master and Commander, Dead Poets Society). During an Australian Indian summer, a group of students and some staff from Appleyard College go for a daytrip up to Hanging Rock. Four of the girls go off from the group to explore higher up the rock but only one returns, screaming. With one of the teaching staff also missing, the rest of the group returns to the school where the police are immediately involved in an investigation. However it quickly becomes evident that no trace of the girls can be found anywhere on or around Hanging Rock. Commonly thought to be based on a true story, it turns out that that isn't the case, but what emerges is a chilling tale for viewers who appreciate subtle and chilling suspense.
