Movie Summary

Gore Verbinski

Captain Jack Sparrow is the ex-captain of legendary pirate ship the Black Pearl. He wants it back from his former first mate - the devious Captain Barbossa. With the help of a young, dashing, master-swordsman blacksmith Will Turner, himself after the Black Pearl because they kidnapped his lover Elizabeth Swan, Sparrow sets off after the crew of the Black Pearl, who are all enduring a horrible curse; one that makes them immortal but inhuman.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times A.O. Scott

The dazzling, high-flying silliness is quite an achievement. The movie is better than it deserves to be, given its origins: a ride at Disneyland and Disney World.

  • 60

    Variety Todd McCarthy

The picture's constant forward movement and breezy sense of amusement about itself provide a certain mild sort of diversion.

  • 30

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

This noisy retread, a secondhand facsimile of a movie, is, except for the headache its boisterous sound level leaves you with, as forgettable as a bad day in the Disneyland parking...

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (0)

  • QUOTES (15)

    • Jack: You will always remember this as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow.

    • Murtogg: Oh, the Dauntless is the power in these waters, true enough, but there's no ship that can match the Interceptor for speed.
Sparrow: I've heard of one. It's supposed to be very fast, nigh uncatchable. The Black Pearl.

    • Murtogg: The Black Pearl is a real ship.
      Mullroy: No, it's not.
Murtogg: Yes, it is. I've seen it.
      Mullroy: You've seen it?
      Murtogg: Yes.
      Mullroy: You haven't seen it!
      Murtogg: Yes I have!
Mullroy: You've seen a ship with black sails, that's crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that hell itself spat him back out?
      Murtogg: No.
      Mullroy: No.
Murtogg: But I have seen a ship with black sails.

    • Norrington: No additional shots nor powder. A compass that doesn't point north. (pulls out Jack's sword) And I half expected it to be made of wood. You are without doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of.
Sparrow: But you have heard of me.

    • Elizabeth: Pirate or not, this man saved my life!
Norrington: One good deed is not enough to redeem a man of a lifetime of wickedness!

    • Elizabeth: You're despicable.
      Sparrow: Sticks and stones, love.

    • Sparrow: (during sword fight) Who makes all these?
Will: I do. And I practice with them... three hours a day.
Sparrow: You need to find yourself a girl, mate. Or... perhaps the reason you practice three hours a day is that you already found one, and are otherwise incapable of wooing said strumpet. You're not a eunuch are you?

    • Norrington: Well, I trust you will always remember this is the day that Captain Jack Sparrow almost escaped.

    • Pintel: Hello, poppet.

    • Officer: This ship cannot be crewed by two men. You'll never make it out of the bay.
Sparrow: Son... (points musket at face) I'm Captain Jack Sparrow. Savvy?

    • Norrington: That is, without doubt, the worst pirate I have ever seen.

    • Lieutenant Groves: That's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen.

    • Barbossa: (to Elizabeth) The moonlight shows us for what we really are. We are not among the living and so we cannot die. But neither are we dead. For too long I've been parched of thirst and unable to quench it. Too long I've been starvin' to death, and haven't died! I feel nothin'. Not the wind on my face, nor the spray of the sea... not the warmth of a woman's flesh. You best start believin' in ghost stories Miss Turner. You're in one!

    • Parrot: Dead men tell no tales.

    • Sparrow: Me. I'm dishonest. And an honest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly... it's the honest ones you want to look out for.
