Their parents, played by William H. Macy (Fargo) and Joan Allen (Nixon) are blind to this transition. Although a nightmare for Mary Sue, Bud is having his dream come true, for he knows everything about this small town where everything is in varying shades of gray. As the outsiders introduce concepts of love, feelings, color, and life in general shown through sex, art, literature and emotion, their world changes.
