Plunkett & Macleane is an action comedy loosely based on the real lives of 18th century criminals William Plunkett and James MacLaine. In the film, Will Plunkett (Robert Carlyle) works as a petty criminal in London. During a robbery one day, Plunkett's partner is killed and he is captured. The events are witnessed by Captain James Macleane (Jonny Lee Miller), who is on his way to debtor's prison. Both Plunkett and Macleane know that Plunkett's partner swallowed a ruby before being killed, so both head to the graveyard to dig him up and reclaim it. After they meet there, they realize that they would actually form a superb criminal team and together they begin to work together to rob the richest people in London. A wrench is thrown into their plans, however, when Macleane falls in love with the wealthy Lady Rebecca Gibson (Liv Tyler) and puts the lives of both men in jeopardy.

Metacritic Score

  • 50

The New York Times Stephen Holden

None of it adds up to terribly much beyond a rip-roaring adventure that shows off Carlyle and Miller as cynical British city cousins of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

  • 38

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

A film overgrown with so many directorial flourishes that the heroes need machetes to hack their way to within view of the audience.

  • 20

    Los Angeles Times

Everything is stunningly photographed by John Mathieson, but to paraphrase Gertrude Stein, a cockroach is a cockroach is a cockroach.
