Pocketful of Miracles is a 1961 story about the relationship between Apple Annie (Bette Davis), a rag-clad apple vendor, and a street-smart gangster, Dave the Dude (Glenn Ford). Dave buys an apple from Annie every day believing it gives him luck. When she doesn't show up on the corner one day, Dave goes to her run-down shack where he finds her contemplating suicide. Annie tells Dave that she has just received a letter from her daughter, Louise (Ann-Margret), who is living in Europe and receiving a high-priced eduction funded by Annie. Annie has led her daughter to believe that she is living a life of wealth and luxury. Now Louise has written to say that she will be visiting with her rich fiance, Carlos Romero (Peter Mann), and Annie can not bear to let her daughter see the real circumstances of her existence. Dave decides to help Annie out by staging an elaborate reception for Louise and her fiance to fool them into thinking that Apple Annie is a wealthy woman. Pocketful of Miracles is the last film in the career of director Frank Capra.
