Police, Adjective is the 2009 crime drama in which undercover cop Cristi (Dragos Bucur) is given an uncomfortable assignment. As a young man with a beautiful bride, Anca (Irina Saulescu), he's hoping to maintain financial, familial, and career stability by pleasing his supervisor. However, he's given the assignment of trailing a suspected drug dealer, Victor (Radu Costin), through the shady streets of the city of Vaslui, Romania. His boss, Nelu (Ion Stoica), wants a bust that will bring down a local cartel's crime syndicate. But Cristi discovers that Victor is just a teenager who likes to get high with his friends. Realizing this, Cristi is reluctant to take action and lets Victor go, but Nelu will have none of that. The anxious relationships begin to spiral as Cristi is forced to deal with pressure at work that conflicts with his sense for justice. Directed by Corneliu Porumboiu, Police, Adjective was an official selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    Variety

Porumboiu is one of the few helmers working today who so completely understands both the power of language and the power of visuals.

  • 80

The New York Times A.O. Scott

So much in this meticulous and moving film is between the lines, and almost nothing is by the book.

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Police, Adjective may not be the film you're expecting, but it's one that will stay on your mind.
