Police Beat is a 2005 crime drama written and directed by Robinson Devor. Z (Pape Sidy Niang) is a bicycle cop living and working in Seattle. He is also an African immigrant. Z is bored and frustrated with his life. He spends his days riding around Seattle dealing with many different people and their petty problems. Few of the crimes he responds to are of much consequence. However, the crimes and general foolishness are never ending, a fact he finds frustrating. His request for a promotion to car patrol seems forever lost in department bureaucracy. As he rides all over the city his mind wanders from one topic to another. However, more often than not he worries and obsesses about his girlfriend who has gone on a long camping trip with her ex-boyfriend. Z's thoughts are narrated in Wolof, the native language of Senegal. Police Beat is a meditative and often dream-like exploration of the inner-working of the human mind.
