Pollyanna follows a free-spirited girl as she helps revive a town that has stifled under the firm control of Aunt Polly (Jane Wyman). Pollyanna (Hayley Mills) is a cheerful girl who was raised by her missionary parents until their death. Despite the difficulties she's faced, Pollyanna stays focused on the good things life has to offer. Her only relative is her spinster aunt Polly, whom she was named after. Polly has controlled the town of Harrington with her wealth. The citizens want to rebuild an old orphanage, an idea Polly opposes, and several people work to organize a carnival to raise the needed funds. Because of Polly's opposition, many townspeople are reluctant to get involved and Pollyanna is forbidden to participate. With a little prodding from others, and a conversation with Pollyanna, the town's minister speaks out in support of the carnival and it is a resounding success. Pollyanna must sneak out of the house to attend, and when she sneaks back in, there is a terrible accident that threaten to sink her high spirits. The Walt Disney production was based on the novel by Eleanor Porter. Mills went on to star in five more Disney films during her career.moreless
