Popi is a 1969 American film directed by Arthur Hiller and starring Alan Arkin and Rita Moreno. Abraham Rodriguez (Arkin) works three jobs to support his two sons, leaving him little time to be a parent. He works in hopes of making enough money to marry his long-time girlfriend Lupe (Moreno). When Abraham realizes that his sons would be better off as political refugees than as poor Americans living in a New York ghetto, he concocts a plan. He takes his boys to Central Park and teaches them how to row a boat in the lake. He and the boys then depart for Florida. He steals a boat, tells the boys to get in and tells them to take off until they run out of gas, get rid of the motor, and then row their way back to shore, all in hopes of somebody finding them and mistaking them for Cuban refugees. When they are found, sunburnt and dehydrated, they are showered with flowers and gifts from strangers, and Popi sneaks into their hospital room to check on them. This tearjerker of a comedy was well received by critics.moreless
