Poster Boy is a 2004 drama starring Matt Newton as Henry Kray, a gay college student trying to keep his sexual orientation a secret because of his conservative father's campaign for re-election as a Senator. Henry doesn't question his lifestyle at all. He has known he's gay for a long time and has a reputation on campus as a something of a playboy. His father, however, has become a nationally-recognized political personality as an outspoken homophobe, often attacking homosexuality in his speeches. When Senator Kray announces he'll be kicking off his re-election campaign at Henry's college, local gay rights groups begin pressuring Henry to come out. His father's speech at his school may be the perfect opportunity to make a national statement about gay rights, but is it worth possibly destroying his relationship with his father? Jack Noseworthy co-stars as Anthony, a former activist and Henry's love interest, and Valerie Geffner plays Izzie, Anthony's HIV-positive friend. Poster Boy is a tense drama about one young man who could change the world at the risk of losing his family and friends.

Metacritic Score

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Even with satisfying performances from the principal actors, Poster Boy is longer on energy than focus.

  • 50

    Variety David Rooney

Underproduced and compromised by an uneven script and a tendency to descend into melodrama, the DV-lensed feature nonetheless is well acted and directed with confidence.

  • 40

    The New York Times

A polemic masquerading as a movie, Poster Boy unspools like a humorless lecture on right-wing homophobia.
