Prairie Moon is a classic Gene Aurty western about a trio of orphaned boys who travel from the big city to live on the ranch. Gene and his trusted partner Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette) are a couple of cattle ranchers continually perplexed because their livestock are disappearing from right underneath them. It turns out that notorious cattle rustler Franck Welch (Stanley Andrews) and his gang have been stealing Autry's cows. However, Welch and his crooked crew are hiding the hoisted bovine behind a waterfall at the ranch of the town gangster Jim "Legs" Barton (William Pawley), who doesn't take kindly to this news, concerned that authorities will discover his hideout. After a heated gunfight, Legs is fatally wounded, and asks Gene to look after his three young boys, Brains (Tommy Ryan), Nails (Walter Tetley) and Slick (David Gorcey), who turn out to be rather a trio of rather unruly street thugs. Millhouse travels to New York to retrieve the young hooligans, who do not take to life on a ranch, or to living with Gene. In a battle of the wits, Welch tries to work up a plan to take the boys away, leaving Gene with no choice but to one up the rustler and outsmart him on his own terms. Ralph Staub directs this classic feel good movie showing Autry at his best.moreless
