Precious is a 2009 American drama movie, based on the novel Push by Sapphire, starring Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, and Mariah Carey, with financial backing from Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey. In the award-winning film, Claireece aka 'Precious' Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) is an obese, illiterate, unhappy 17 year old girl who lives in the ghetto of Harlem with her physically, sexually, and mentally abusive unemployed mother, Mary (Mo'Nique). Pregnant for the second time with her father's baby, Precious is expelled from her school and enrolled in an alternative school program. The film follows Precious as she tries to defeat the odds and take back her right to a fair chance at life, despite all of the setbacks from a baby with down syndrome, to unfit parents, to surviving on welfare. The heartbreaking story of the underprivileged and abused girl was received very well, winning 70 other awards, and nominations for an additional 55.
