Rating:
PG-13
Pretty in Pink is one of the many hit teen comedies directed and written by John Hughes. It starts with Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald), a hardworking senior in high school. She has her eye on Blane McDonough (Andrew McCarthy), but knows better than to act on it. Blane is one of the wealthier kids at the school. He hangs out with others of a similar economic background. This clique is extremely exclusive and they tend to look down on anyone who actually has to work for their money. Strangely enough, Blane actually takes a liking to Andie. Against the wishes of his preppy friends, he asks her to the prom. Andie's friend, Duckie (Jon Cryer), is also in love with her, but plays the part of best friend and lets his feelings sit in the background. When he finds out that Andie is going out with Blane, he gets angry at her, both because he worries for her safety and because he's jealous. It's up to Andie to decide which boy is right for her.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

Although it is not a great movie, it contains some moments when the audience is likely to think, yes, being 16 was exactly like that.

  • 70

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Fortunately, the actors are mostly likable, and the story is told gently enough to downplay both its trendiness and its conventionality.

  • 70

    Variety

A rather intelligent (if not terribly original) look at adolescent insecurities.
