Princesas is a 2005 Spanish film directed by Fernando Leon de Aranoa. It tells the story of Caye (Candela Pena), a prostitute working in Madrid, who is hanging out in her spare time at a hair salon. She wants to save money for breast implants, and is making plans for a better life, complaining about the immigrant prostitute girls who take their clients and money in this business. Her hatred and beliefs are shaken down when she meets Zulema (Micaela Nevarez), a girl from the Dominican Republic, who is selling sex to send money to her mother and son back home. A strong friendship is starting to develop among the girls as they share everything and support each other. Things are complicated by the fact that Zulema becomes ill and is admitted to the hospital. Caye, meanwhile, starts to date a decent young man, and is on the edge of revealing her occupation to everybody, including her mother. The film is a sensitive drama that shows the adversity that some poor girls have to overcome in their search for a better life.moreless

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Indeed, Aranoa loves these women so completely that his film seems overly drawn out at nearly two hours and likely would have had greater effect had it been half an hour shorter. E...

    Variety Jonathan Holland

This loosely-structured pic feels authentic, its underdramatized script resolutely nonjudgmental.

  • 40

    The New York Times

A maudlin melodrama about prostitutes in Madrid, Princesas is not, alas, the new film by Pedro Almodóvar, but a dilution of his manner by the writer-director Fernando León de Aranoa.
