Movie Summary

Howard Zieff
Released:
1980
Rating:
R
Private Benjamin is a comedy following a sheltered young woman who joins the U.S. Army after the devastating loss of her new husband on their wedding night. Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) believed she'd be sent to Paris, but instead finds herself in boot camp. Captain Lewis (Eileen Brennan) makes it clear Benjamin won't be enjoying a private room, fancy clothes or trips to Paris and exotic locales. Accustomed to having everything she has wanted, Benjamin struggles with adapting to the strict discipline required. Her struggles and misadventures with her fellow soldiers soon builds her confidence in herself and she proves to the chain of command that she's a good soldier. She's promoted up the ranks and soon finds herself stationed in Paris, just like the recruiter promised. When she enters a new relationship, though, she must make a difficult decision about her military career. The 1981 film was nominated for Academy Awards in Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Writing.moreless
