Private Parts is a 1997 autobiographical comedy produced by Ivan Reitman and starring Howard Stern, Mary McCormack, Paul Giamatti, Robin Quivers, and Allison Janney in the true story of Howard Stern's journey from an introverted son of a recording engineer to an internationally-renowned shock jock. Howard Stern has blazed a trail for radio disc jockeys interested in shaking up the establishment, earning both huge ratings and plenty of criticism for his controversial, boundary-pushing on-air antics. This film, based closely on Stern's best-selling autobiography of the same name, follows both Stern's professional evolution from a fledgling DJ to a household name, as well as his personal life. McCormack plays Alison, Howard's college girlfriend. Howard and Alison marry at a young age, but this film reveals the struggles they endured as Howard became a radio rock star bent on destroying all conceptions of what is and is not appropriate for radio broadcasts. Privater Parts is an acclaimed and illuminating comedy, featuring music by Rob Zombie, Porno for Pyros, Marilyn Manson, and The Dust Brothers.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Thanks to sharp editing and surprisingly strong comic timing, the film puts less emphasis on the Stern raunchiness than on how his wilder routines make listeners drive off the road.

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times

Private Parts is a supremely crafty, smartly written, and--given the number of "himselfs" and "herselfs" on the cast list--surprisingly well-acted piece of pop kitsch.

  • 80

    Variety Todd McCarthy

A funny and unexpectedly beguiling account of the outrageous humorist's unlikely rise to the pinnacle of radio celebrity.
