Promised Lands

Promised Lands is a shocking 1974 documentary centered around the ever-present clash between Israelis and Arabs. The film was written and directed by Susan Sontag, an American-Jewish author, political activist and feminist of the 20th century. The film attempts to capture the causes, effects and scarring aftermath of the undying wars that take place between Israel and it's Arabic neighbors. Although the film contains little to no offense material (it barely contains dialogue), it was banned by the Israeli government during its release. This is most likely due to the time during which it was released, which was shortly after the last days of the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Promised Lands offers little narrative and structure - it is mostly a sequence of shots juxtaposed against one another. The documentary does include interviews with The Last Jew writer Yoram Kaniuk and physicist Yuval Ne'eman. Sontag absconds from heavy political rants, instead narrowing in on disturbing images of tanks left half buried in the sand. Promised Lands is a great film for all those interested in watching a fairly neutral film on the terrors of war.moreless
