Protecting the King is a 2007 American drama written, directed and produced by David Edward Stanley. This film is a fictionalized account of David Edward Stanley's experience working for Elvis Presley. David Edward Stanley (Matt Barr) is Elvis's (Peter Dobson) step-brother. When David was sixteen years old he was hired by Elvis to work as a body guard and taken on tour. Protecting the King is not a voyeuristic Elvis biography, instead it is a moral tale that focuses on an adolescent's harsh thrust into the music industry. He experiences first hand the crazy highs, the lows, and almost unimaginable excess surrounding The King of Rock & Roll. The film explains how David and other members of the entourage were conflicted by the desire to serve Elvis and the need to protect him from the vices that ultimately would lead to his destruction. Protecting the King reminds us that in the end no amount of protecting can save a person if they are not willing to first protect themselves.moreless
