Queen of the Stardust Ballroom tells the bittersweet but inspiring story of Bea Asher (Maureen Stapleton), a lonely widow who finds an unlikely Prince Charming later in life. Originally broadcast as a 1975 television production, this well-acted drama provides a welcome, middle-aged contrast to today's romances where hard bodies and perfectly coiffed hair often take the place of sentiment. After Bea suddenly loses her husband, her worried friends think she may have given up on life so they drag her to the Stardust Ballroom, a local dance club that recreates the Big Band music and atmosphere of her youth. When she cannot remember the old-time dance moves, a middle-aged mail carrier, Al (Charles Durning) offers to teach her how to dance again, and subtly sweeps her off her feet. This simple but resonant love story may lack big budget production values and famous faces, but successfully provides a satisfying romantic evening.
