Quinceanera is a 2006 drama directed and written by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. Magdalena (Emily Rios) is approaching her 15th birthday celebration. In her culture, this birthday marks her departure from childhood and entrance into young womanhood. The problem is that Magdalena is not quite ready to leave childhood behind. Not only is her celebration costing the family too much, meaning that Magdalena has to wear a secondhand dress, her family is also about to be rocked by a shocking revelation. Magdalena cannot fit into her hand-me-down dress because she is pregnant. With nowhere else to go, the birthday girl seeks shelter with her uncle, Tomas (Chalo Gonz''lez), and cousin, Carlos (Jesse Garcia). Carlos is gay and understands the kind of discrimination and uncertainty that Magdalena is facing as a teenage mother. As she struggles to fit in and readjust her expectations for life, Magdalena realizes that she is learning more about coming of age than she would have during her celebration.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

The New York Times Stephen Holden

As smart and warmhearted an exploration of an upwardly mobile immigrant culture as American independent cinema has produced.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

As sweet and gentle as it is, Quinceañera is quite clear-eyed about human cruelty and indifference. In structure, however, there is a circularity to the film that allows it to end...

    Variety David Rooney

This is a fresh, spirited drama, charming and unpretentious. It mines a similar vein to recent Latino-themed pics such as "Raising Victor Vargas" and "Real Women Have Curves."
