The setting is during an ice age, humanity is dying, and the only way that people occupy their time is by playing this board game. Some places take the game to life though. In a gambling casino, six people are put into the game, and if they die in the game, they are executed in real life. They all compete in a tournament to win a prize that has not been named. Essex (Paul Newman) and Vivia (Brigitte Fossey), his pregnant wife, are set on a trail to find Essex's brother, Francha (Thomas Hill). When they get to the hotel, Essex is sent out to buy firewood. While he is out, a bomb exploded in the apartment and killed everyone. Essex leaves to find who did it. He ends up at the casino where he is welcomed to a game of what he assumes to be a simple game of poker, but it is more difficult then that.moreless
