Rabbit Run is a faithful 1970 adaptation of the acclaimed novel by John Updike that explores the conflicts of a former high school athlete unable to deal with adult life. Harry 'Rabbit' Angstrom (James Caan) was once the star of his basketball team, and he married the prettiest girl at school, Janice (Carrie Snodgrass). Now that they are expecting their first child, Janice spends her days drinking in front of the TV and bickering with Rabbit. He finally reaches his limit, tells her he is going out for a pack of cigarettes and never comes back. Instead, he looks up his old coach, Marty Tothero (Jack Albertson), but he finds the former coach's sad, secretive existence unbearable. He finds a friendly prostitute, Ruth (Anjanette Comer) but his restlessness keeps him moving. He encounters a pastor, Reverend Eccles (Arthur Hill) that makes him reconsider his wandering ways. Director Jack Smight captures the grim mood of the novel with a timely character study of a lost soul.moreless
