Radio is the 2003 dramatic film that is based on the true story of T.L. Hanna High School football coach Harold Jones and a mentally challenged man named James Robert "Radio" Kennedy. When Jones (Ed Harris) befriends Radio (Cuba Gooding Jr.) by protecting him from some malicious football players, Radio gains the confidence he needs to become a beloved part of the high school community. When at first Radio is unable to even speak, Jones encourages him to find his voice and not let others judge him. Set in Anderson, South Carolina in 1976, Radio is a coming of age story that portrays one man's acceptance both within a community and acceptance of himself. Also starring Debra Winger, Alfre Woodard, Brent Sexton, Chris Mulkey, Sarah Drew, and Riley Smith Radio was directed by Michael Tollin. Upon it's release, Radio was not a critical or commercial success.
