Raggedy Man is a 1981 drama directed by Jack Fisk. In the film, Nita Longley (Sissy Spacek) is a divorced woman living in George, Texas during World War II. She is the mother of two boys and often the subject of town gossip because of her failed marriage. Due to her job as the town telephone operator, she does not leave her house often. Many of the men make unwanted advances towards Nita, but she is not interested in having another relationship. When a sailor, Teddy (Eric Roberts), comes to town he successfully hits on Nita and they begin a relationship. This relationship furthers the gossip about Nita and she takes it all in stride. However, when Teddy is called to active duty, Nita finds herself all alone with her boys again. She wants to pack up and leave town, but she feels she must face all the backstabbers in town before she goes.
